As the old saying goes: "Roam the Five Great Mountains, but the ultimate scenery lies at Sanqing." In the northeastern part of Shangrao, Jiangxi Province, stands a sacred mountain that embodies both natural splendor and Taoist mystique—Mount Sanqing. Named after its three main peaks—Yujing, Yuxu, and Yuhua—which are said to resemble three Taoist deities seated in contemplation, this mountain has been acclaimed as "the most beautiful granite landscape on the western edge of the Pacific Ocean."
The beauty of Mount Sanqing lies first in its extraordinary granite peaks and grotesque rocks. It is an open-air museum of granite landforms, where nature has spent hundreds of millions of years sculpting breathtaking masterpieces through geological evolution. The most famous formation is the "Giant Python Rising from the Mountain," a 128-meter-tall stone pillar that shoots up from a deep valley like a colossal snake poised to soar into the sky—exuding raw power and defiance. Standing in silent contrast is the graceful "Goddess of the East," a towering rock formation that resembles a young woman seated with her hair tied back, her gentle features gazing peacefully over the vast land. The interplay of strength and tenderness, of masculine and feminine energy, creates the most harmonious dialogue between heaven and earth.
Strolling along the West Coast Plank Road, suspended at an elevation of 1,600 meters, offers an entirely different experience. This "jade ribbon in the sky" clings to sheer cliffs—with vertical rock faces on one side and bottomless abysses on the other. Walking along it, you tread upon rolling clouds below while layered peaks unfold before your eyes, as if floating through the heavens. At sunset, the spectacle becomes even more magnificent: the pristine white clouds are dyed into flowing cinnabar, fragmenting the mountains into an ink-wash painting of shifting light and shadow, each moment breathtakingly beautiful.
Mount Sanqing is also a sacred Taoist site of profound cultural depth. Since Ge Hong of the Eastern Jin Dynasty established his alchemy retreat here, over 1,600 years of Taoist heritage have imbued this mountain with an ethereal, otherworldly charm. The Sanqing Palace complex, laid out in the pattern of the Eight Trigrams and nestled among ancient pines and verdant cypresses, blends seamlessly with nature—truly embodying the Taoist ideal of "harmony between heaven and humanity." As the couplet at the palace entrance reads: *"By day the wind sweeps through the hall; by dusk the clouds seal the gate"—a verse that captures the tranquility and detachment from worldly clamor that pervades this sacred place.
Whether it is the azalea blossoms of spring, the vast pine forests of summer, the suspended plank roads of autumn, or the jade-white peaks of winter, Mount Sanqing offers sublime scenery in every season.
