Down in the southern reaches of China, in Yangshuo, Guangxi, Laozhai Mountain presents yet another landscape. Nestled close to the Li River and rising slightly over 300 meters, it is not particularly tall, but its prime location makes it the perfect spot for viewing the "Xingping Scenery." From the summit, the Li River meanders below like a green silk ribbon, with the ancient town of Xingping and the surrounding karst peaks all in view. The sunset views, in particular, are breathtaking.

What makes this climb even more special is the heartwarming story behind the stone path leading up the mountain. In 1996, a Japanese tourist named Hayashi Katsuyuki was so awestruck by the beauty of Laozhai Mountain that he decided to raise funds to build a trail. Over two years, he carried materials up the mountain on his shoulders, step by step, paving 1,159 stone steps. At the summit, he built the "Friendship Pavilion," symbolizing his hope for everlasting friendship between the Chinese and Japanese peoples. Today, this free mountain path welcomes visitors from all directions, becoming a warm human touch within the mountain landscape.
