China's Solar Term — Grain Rain

Date:2026-05-08
Hits:

Grain Rain is the last solar term of spring, when all living things prepare for the arrival of summer. After this solar term, temperatures rise gradually and rainfall increases. There is an old saying: "Tea buds emerge at Pure Brightness, and ripe tea is ready at Grain Rain." Tea picked and processed during this period is known as Grain Rain Tea, also called Second Spring Tea.

Legend has it that when Cangjie, the historian in the Yellow Emperor’s era, observed the footprints of birds and beasts and created hieroglyphs, a sudden rain of millet grains fell from the sky. For this reason, Grain Rain has become a day to commemorate Cangjie’s invention of writing. Upon the proposal of China’s Permanent Mission to the United Nations, the UN designated April 20 every year as UN Chinese Language Day.
